Connecting a Computer to the Network
in the Mechanical Engineering Buildings or Akerman Hall

WARNING:
Make sure to remove any bridge network devices as attaching a machine acting as a router or switch or bridge is forbidden on ANY University Network (This also includes any device which allows network sharing or wireless access to the network).

Also note that you may not install servers of any kind (Web, Telnet, ftp, kazaa, EDonkey, IIS, Mail, Exchange, and many more) without prior permission of Enet. The only exception currently is sshd (use a current version). For more information see: The MEnet Policy Page

DO NOT CONNECT any device to any network port in the Mechanical Engineering Buildings nor Akerman Hall without first consulting Enet Staff.

Jacks are assigned for one machine only and ONLY the specific assigned machine should be connected to an assigned jack.
(If you connect any other machine, we will turn the jack off - WITHOUT NOTICE - we also may turn off the jack of the machine that was plugged into the wrong jack, and/or disable your access to use wireless/open-ports).

The Exception to the above rules are ports designated as OPEN-PORTS (jacks-open), to which you may connect any Computer which is used by only one person (computers only - no other device).
Contact Enet if you have questions.

Permission to connect your machine to an ASSIGNED jack will not be given until ALL of the information in the
Network Connect Form (ASCII TEXT ONLY - other forms will be refused)
is filled in and submitted to
Enet (menet@me.umn.edu)
(see below for information on how to find the Physical Address of your machine).

Most of the live jacks in conference rooms, the Student lounges, Meche 125 and Wireless connections all come under the category of OPEN-PORT (jacks-open). If you are unsure, ask Enet.

There also may be ports managed by NTS (A.K.A. Etherjack), for these we must contact NTS directly before connecting to them. So ask Enet in any case (we can let you know what we need).
