Recently, MEnet has installed a number of software packages that
support chinese text. This document is designed to answer questions
concerning this software.
CXterm/cxterm
1. How do I start cxterm/CXterm?
You don't need to do anything special. Just type 'cxterm' or 'CXterm'.
2. What is the difference between cxterm and CXterm?
You can only read Chinese with cxterm. But you can both read and input
Chinese with CXterm. By pressing the function keys F1, F2, F3, ... on the keyboard you can select different Chinese input methods.
Chinese Fonts in Netscape
Chinese Fonts should work correctly on the Linux machines. On the Sun and SGI machines, you must first make sure the Chinese fonts are loaded. You can do this by either running 'CXterm' first, or by running the command 'xset fp+ /stage/share/fonts/chinese' before running netscape
1. How do I read Chinese in Netscape?
You need to set up the correct font encoding in Netscape:
- In Netscpe 3.X, go from menu "option" to Document encoding and select
"Simplified Chinese(GB)" or Traditional Chinese(Big5).
- In Netscape 4.X, go from menu "View" to "encoding" and select "Simplified
Chinese(GB) or "Traditional Chinese(Big5).
3. How to change the size of Chinese fonts in Netscape?
From "Preferences" in the "Edit" menu of Netscape 4.x or "option" menu of
Netscape 3.X, go to "Fonts and Encodings", select "Simplified Chinese(gb
2312-80)" then change size to 16. Change the option for both variable
width font and fixed width font.
The change will work after you exit and restart Netscape.
