Bridge Building Project
Park Elementary School
Sixth grade classes at Park Elementary school are taking the
Bridge
Challenge
They're building a truss bridge out of rolled up newspaper and masking tape,
and spanning a 5 foot chasm!
Instructions for building the bridge are
provided, but require some math, imagination, creativity and design skills
Components are easy to make, requiring only patience and a dowel rod for
rolling newspaper. We'll be working in teams of four, with two supervisory
high school students providing project management and direction. We plan
on taking three one-hour sessions to manufacture our bridges, and a fourth
session for painting and touch up.
Current Status
Each of the three 6th grade classes will be building a bridge. Approximately
4 one hour sessions are required to complete the project.
Currently, the first 6th grade class will be completing the 3rd of four building
sessions this week (February 24th). At the end of the second session last
week, they had constructed all the required structural tubes, and were beginning
to construct the joints. This week they should (hopefully!) finish construction
of the bridge. Next week is reserved for cleanup, detail work, painting and
decorating.
The second and third 6th grade classes will be beginning work on their bridge
project this week, February 22nd and 23rd.
