WelcomeThis web site describes work done at the University of Minnesota in support of the MEMS Free-Piston Knock Engine Program. Overall funding of this project is provided by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Honeywell International is the prime contractor and The University of Minnesota is a subcontractor of Honeywell. Why Micro-Engines?Currently, the United States Government is keenly interested in developing micro-energy conversion devices. These devices are meant to replace batteries in applications that range from miniature air vehicles to tiny electronic sensors; all of which require specific energies i.e., energy per unit mass, greater than batteries can provide. Proposed solutions include micro-fuel cells and micro-engines. |
