Competitive Usability Assessment System

  • We developed a new approach to competitive usability assessment. The steps are as follows.
  • Task analysis: Develop work process maps that show user tasks required.
  • UI map: Capture screen shots to show the application screens that support each user task.
  • Usability analyses: Usability evaluation using combination of heuristic analyses, walkthroughs, and/or usability testing.
  • Results integration: Aggregate usability results into a common spreadsheet and assign severity ratings.
  • Usability profiles: Create graphical profiles of each competing application.
  • Requirements: Analyze profiles and problems to determine how usability can be improved.
  • Design direction: Based on the previous steps, generate design concepts for user testing.

Design Concepts for Intersection Decision Support Systems

  • Based on information requirements determined in a previous project, we designed several concepts for Intersection Decision Support systems.
  • Concept designs ranged from a dynamic warning sign below the stop sign to a set of two large variable message signs showing the presence of approaching vehicles in both directions and color coding to show when vehicles are too close.
  • A select number of concepts are currently being evaluated in both simulator and on-road studies..

An Heuristic Evaluation of Several Medical Infusion Pumps

  • One of several students to conduct a heuristic evaluation of several commonly used infusion pumps.
  • Tasks included interviewing and observing subject matter experts and users, the development of a user profile, task analysis, and use cases.
  • Results were compiled and shared with both the manufacturers of each pump and the hospitals where the evaluations were conducted.

Design of a Wayfinding System for a Geriatric Long-term Care Facility
  • As part of a multidisciplinary team of designers, architects, mental health professionals and staff we developed wayfinding signs and related affordances for a geriatric long-term care facility.
  • Design parameters emphasized the use of consistent themes, landmarks, lighting, building materials, and placement of furnishings and signage that was appropriate for residents with reduced mobility and considerable cognitive impairment.
  • This project required working closely with graphic designers and project coordinators plus literature reviews, design iterations, and user testing.

User Interface Design of an Online Supplement for Introductory Statistics
  • One of three web designers that worked on a Government of Alberta research grant that focused on the effective use of technology in the classroom.
  • The project used instructional design and usability engineering methods to promote active and efficient learning by psychology students.
  • Tasks included concept design, prototyping, stylesheet design, content generation, user testing, and web development.

User Interface Design and Evaluation of a Decision Support System
  • This web application helped marketers and merchandisers make sense of customer, product, and promotion data.
  • Tasks included redesigning the interface to meet corporate branding guidelines, user testing, screen design, and working with 3rd party vendors and graphic designers.

User Interface Design of Several Intranet Sites
  • Worked with a graphic designer to prototype the corporate intranet site at Net Perceptions, Inc.
  • Also designed and implemented the Human Interface Design Group (HIDG) intranet site using HTML and JavaScript.
  • Tasks included concept design, site architecture, navigation, and user testing.

Development of User-Centered Design Process
  • Helped develop the a user-centered design process at Net Perceptions, Inc.
  • Designed and developed document templates used by the design teams to develop a consistent process on all projects.
  • Lead the review by other team members and maintained documents.

An Evaluation of Several Technological Supplements for Introductory Psychology
  • Worked on a government research grant to design and develop a methodology to evaluate educational software.
  • The method that was developed focused on pedagogical, instructional design, and usability criteria.
  • Was responsible for creating the instrument, reviewing literature, planning and conducting evaluation(s), and interpreting results.

Usability Testing of a Handheld Device
  • Evaluated a software product designed to promote effective communication in a distributed setting using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
  • Results indicated that PDAs are limited in terms of efficient data input, and only offers benefits when users are in fact distributed.
