Solidification Time in Casting

Process models such as that for solidification time are useful for understanding the roles of process parameters in determining process behavior. This understanding of the process is valuable for process design and process improvements such as cycle time reduction. The exercise shows the effects of part size and shape on solidification time.

Cooling time is an important aspect of solidification processes such as casting and injection molding. Mold filling time can be of the order of a few seconds while cooling time can be many minutes, depending on the size of the part. So, part production cycle time is usually determined primarily by solidification time.

The question is: How does part size and shape enter into determining solidification time in casting?
