Turned Surface Profile, Surface Roughness

Machining processes create new surfaces on the workpiece. Both the finished surface shape and and subsurface structure and properties (surface integrity) enter into determining part performance. Surface integrity is discussed in Chapter 31.

The surface profile produced by the tool nose in a lathe turning process is shown in Figure 23-7. Turned surface profile depends on tool shape and also the cutting conditions. The effects of tool shape and cutting conditions are shown in this exercise.
